The Position

Our Engineering team is looking for a full-time Software Engineer with applied AI experience to join us on our mission to help people learn. We are looking for someone who is a proven designer and implementer of micro-services and complex architectural systems, preferably in GoLang. We have a complete CI/CD software lifecycle and an evolving services-oriented architecture hosted in AWS. We operate in a highly collaborative environment with Product and Design to build experiences that matter to our customers. At Varsity Tutors, engineers do not just write code, they actively participate in the conversation on what and how to build the systems and solutions that matter to our customers. This position is a full-time remote opportunity! (We've been remote friendly for years and that isn't going away).

Responsibilities:

• Write performant, maintainable code that is easy to read and well-documented
• Write automated tests to thoroughly validate the correctness of your code
• Deploy large-scale web applications
• Focus on quality, and operate iteratively to get from good to better
• Be a part of your team’s on-call rotation; we all own our code end-to-end from development to deployment to operations

• Work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic and fast-moving team - we ask a lot of questions so come ready to participate!
• Be effective in a team environment working with fellow engineers, product management, and design

Requirements

• Experience with highly concurrent languages such as GoLang, Java, Ruby on Rails, or Python
• Experience with deployment systems (e.g. CodeShip, AWS CodeDeploy)
• Familiarity with AWS Services (e.g. RDS, Kinesis, Lambda, EC2, et cetera)
• Familiarity with the Linux Operating System and command-line tools
• Experience with Ruby on Rails or similar web frameworks is beneficial (e.g. Django)
• Understanding of OO design, algorithms, and data structures
• Familiarity with implementing e-commerce solutions is beneficial
• Familiarity with Search Engine Optimization best practices and techniques is beneficial
• Aptitude to quickly learn new languages and technologies as necessary
• Resilience and the ability to continuously build solutions in unclear situations
• Computer Science or a related degree preferred

Our Hiring Process

• We always use live video calls for our interview process.
• It typically takes 2 weeks from start to finish (we can speed that up or go more slowly if your schedule needs that).

1. Meeting with hiring manager or director (1 hour)

• Questions to get to know you, your background, and your technical abilities.
• Sometimes includes in-depth technical questions or a coding exercise.
• You'll also learn more about the specific team that you'd be on, their initiatives and projects, and their specific tech stack.

2. Conversation with a senior or principal engineer (1 hour)

• Includes a coding exercise
• You may use whatever programming language you're most comfortable with (we want to see you at your best)

3. Final round (30-45 minutes each)

• A series of shorter interviews with three people (a mix of technical leaders and leaders in other departments or divisions).
• You will see the full picture of our company values, culture, communication, and initiatives before you can make a decision.
